Welcome to the Ruhr Metropolis from 16 to 18 September
Servas Germany would like to invite you to a region which is still regarded as an insider tip. The Ruhr region located in the west of Germany in North Rhine-Westphalia, is about 60 km north-east of Cologne. (www.metropoleruhr.de/)
This used to be steel and coal mining area but today you’ll find inviting parks, gardens and recreational areas where people love to go for walks or cycling. Former industrial sites are now venues for art and culture, sport and entertainment.
In 2010 the area became the European Capital of Culture earning recognition for the successful structural transformation from its industrial past to an area that combines industrial heritage and nature.
One example is the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Zeche Zollverein”, (https://www.zollverein.de/), a former colliery and now the symbol of the Ruhr Metropolis and we’ll be going there together. We’ll also visit the beautiful Ruhr valley with Lake Baldeney and Villa Hügel set in an attractive park which belonged to the Krupp family of industrialists…
Programme:
• Friday: * Arrive at hosts’ homes
• Saturday: * 10 a.m. Welcome at the Unperfekthaus (www.unperfekthaus.de) in Essen where we will have breakfast together.
* We’ll then go to “Zeche Zollverein” where we will have a guided tour
(maybe in several languages)
* Then either a walk around the large, interesting complex or relax in one of the cafés,
or visit the pottery and other artists’ studios, “Red Dot Design Museum” (www.red-dot-
design-museum.de/de/essen
* Evening meal and get-together at the Unperfekthaus.
Before the meal you will be able to walk around the house with its unusual concept.
• Sunday: * Visit to Villa Hügel followed by a walk by LakeBaldeney and lunch by the lake.
Your hosts will be Servas members. If you would like to arrive earlier or stay on after the weekend, we’ll be happy to help.
Registration: The number of participants is limited to 30.
Charges: 35 Euro for breakfast, evening meal and fares on Saturday.
After your registration has been confirmed we will let you know who your hosts will be and how you can transfer the participation fee.
After the money has been transferred your place in the group will be definite.
